The toddler years are a time for your little one to
explore new foods. Try not to get too unnerved by picky eating and up-and-down
appetites - they're absolutely normal at this age. Here are a few things
to keep in mind:
- Let kids explore eating. Between
one and two years of age, toddlers are learning to eat on their own.
Finger foods are just right for young toddlers, and so is eating with
a spoon. Keep a damp cloth handy - more food will land on the outside
of your toddler than inside!
- Follow the Food Guide Pyramid,
for young children, that is. This daily guide for 2- to 6-year-olds
illustrates the five food groups in a kid-friendly way and suggests smaller portions for
kids up to age four.
- Don't fret the fussies. Many
toddlers are not terrific eaters - they are growing more slowly, are
not as hungry, and would rather play. But the more you encourage them
to eat, the less they'll eat. So serve them a balanced breakfast to
start the day, and let them eat based on their appetite.
